Today (March 3) is the birthday of Georg Cantor. He founded set theory and introduced the mathematically meaningful concept of transfinite numbers, indefinitely large but distinct from one another. He once said “Some infinites are bigger than other infinites.”

4D analogues of the platonic solids

In 3 dimensions, we know the platonic solids as the Tetrahedron, the Octahedron, the Cube (or hexahedron), the Isocahedron and the Dodecahedron. The suffix -hedron refers to a 3D object called a cell, and the prefix (tetra-, octa-, dodeca- …) refers to the number of 2D faces bounding the cell. For example: tetra-hedron stands for a 3D shape bounded by 4(=tetra) 2D triangles. 

The suffix -choron refers to a 4 dimensional polytope. 4D polytopes are bounded by 3D cells. For example a hypertetrahedron is built up of 5 3D tetrahedral cells. That’s why it is called a penta-choron. The hyperisocahedron is built up of a massive 600 tetrahedral cells.
